Inihayag ni Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson na siya ay magbibitiw na bilang chairman ng Senate blue ribbon committee matapos na magpahayag ng kanilang pagkadismaya ang ilang mga kasamahan sa nagiging takbo ng imbestigasyon sa maanomalyang flood control projects.
Ang kanyang pagbibitiw ay kasunod ng ispekulasyon na magkakaroon ng panibagong balasahan sa Senado, ilang linggo lamang matapos palitan si Senador Francis Escudero ni Senador Vicente Sotto III bilang Senate President.
Sa kabila nito, itinanggi ni Lacson ang panibagong pagpapalit ng liderato ngunit sinabing ang sentimyento ng ilang mga kasamahang senador ang naging dahilan ng kanyang pagbibitiw bilang chairman ng blue ribbon committee, partikular na nina Senador JV Ejercito at Sherwin Gatchalian.
Nauna nang sinabi ni Ejercito na balak niya, at apat pang ibang senador, ang umalis sa majority bloc matapos na idawit ang ilang dati at kasalukuyang senador sa maanomalyang flood control projects na iniimbestigahan ng blue ribbon committee.
“To be honest, I seriously thought about leaving the majority. Because if this is the direction we’re headed, it’s like we’re burning down our own house. We’re neglecting our colleagues, and we’re forgetting who the real culprits are,” ani Ejercito.
“I didn’t say I am moving to the minority. More of being independent, along with some senators,” dagdag pa niya.
Samantala, iginiit ni Lacson na ang lahat ng chairperson sa mga komite sa Senado at Kamara “serve at the pleasure of our peers” dahil sila ay inihalal partikular ng mga miyembro ng majority bloc.
“I’m not serving as chair of the blue ribbon committee at the pleasure of the President of the Philippines, at the pleasure of netizens, at the pleasure of bashers, not even at the pleasure of the public. I serve at the pleasure of my peers,” sinabi ni Lacson.
Aniya, inihahanda na nito ang kanyang resignation letter para kay Senate President Sotto at pormal na ihahain ito sa plenaryo.
Sa kabila nito, nilinaw ni Lacson na ang kanyang pagbaba sa pwesto ay hindi nangangahulugan na ititigil na niya ang paglaban sa korapsyon.
“No amount of criticisms from misinformed netizens and partisan sectors can distract or pressure me from doing my job right, but when my own peers start expressing their group or individual sentiments, maybe it is best to vacate.”
“Nevertheless, I will continue to fight a corrupt and rotten system in the misuse and abuse of public funds as I have consistently done in the course of my long years in public service,” aniya.
Unang inanunsyo ni Lacson ang plano niyang pagbaba bilang chairman ng komite sa panayam ng DZBB nitong Linggo.
“If my colleagues are no longer trusting me enough, especially if the majority of them are not happy anymore with my handling of the blue ribbon committee, maybe it’s time for me to consider stepping down as an option,” sinabi ni Lacson.
